BOWERBIRD TURNS 4. THUS (Neil Feather / John Berndt)
Drums Like Machine Guns
Bowerbird Presents GATE
@ The Rotunda
4014 Walnut Street
NEW YEAR It’s time to celebrate! Over four years ago Bowerbird was hatched in coffee shops, at our favorite watering holes, and in our friends’ living rooms. And after who knows how many shows (we stopped counting after 200), Bowerbird is flying as high as ever. On this night Bowebird is offering an eclectic mix. Visiting from Baltimore is THUS, featuring John Berndt and Neil Feather performing their own music on instruments they invented themselves (that’s one way to have an original voice). From NYC, Woody Sullender, one of the world’s pre-eminent experimental banjo players (yes, there’s actually more than one!), will perform a solo set. Little Ocean, Philly’s best acoustic guitar math rock duo will be coming out of retirement to play a one-show reunion tour. Drums Like Machine Guns, a local favorite, will play fresh from their trip to the sunny tropics of Miami (or maybe they got snowed out?). And Tristan Dahn, man-about-town, will make a rare appearance opening up the evening with a solo set.
The Rotunda is a West Philadelphia community-gathering place that is fueled by the belief that art is a catalyst for social change and that the arts can lead to the formation of meaningful partnerships between the University of Pennsylvania and surrounding neighborhoods. Over 300 events are offered every year, including live music, film, spoken word, theater, art, dance, education, youth programs, arts incubation, and various experimental genres. As an alcohol-free, smoke-free venue, The Rotunda provides a critical social alternative for all ages. At its core, The Rotunda is a shared space fostering learning, enrichment, and community support while empowering the public to present, produce, and promote their work.
