SUMMARY:Tuvan Throat-singing Demo with Alash
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Alash was scheduled to perform at The Rotunda on April 2nd but had to instead cancel the rest of their tour and return home. While they cannot perform in concert right now\, Alash will present a throat-singing demonstration with Q & A\, from their homes in Tuva! This will be a fun way for you to get to know the ensemble\, their singing methods\, and some history behind the songs. \nPlease note the earlier-than-usual event time of 11am Philly time. Since Tuva is 11 hours ahead of Philadelphia\, we had to schedule this accordingly. The added bonus is that children can hopefully join as well! \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. SPACE IS LIMITED. PLEASE RESERVE ONE SPOT PER HOUSEHOLD. Please register HERE. A Zoom link will be sent to you the day of the event. All guests will be muted for the demo and then unmuted for the Q & A. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in A \nlash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. \nCo-Presented with The Rotunda \n \n

SUMMARY:Meredith Monk's Quarry
DESCRIPTION:This event was originally scheduled for Feb 26 but has been rescheduled for March 11. \nRightfully renowned as a composer\, vocalist\, choreographer\, and stage director\, Meredith Monk’s underseen films present their own inventive reflections on the cataclysms of history. Quarry began as a live multimedia opera in 1976 featuring a black and white short film of the same name directed by Monk. With the help of the New York Public Library’s initiative to document groundbreaking live performances\, Monk and Amram Nowak re-staged the work with Monk guiding the film’s camera movements and close-ups not normally found in “filmed theater.” In Quarry\, Monk continues her interest in abstracting her own Jewish history to create an anti-fascist narrative in which she portrays a sick child whose illness progresses in tandem with the rise of a dictator. Featuring not just Monk’s novel vocal and theatrical experiments\, Quarry is both a fascinating performance document and a shapeshifting film in its own right. \nCo-presented with Nightletter. \n\nPROGRAM \nQuarry / Meredith Monk & Amram Nowak / 1977 / 82 min / Digital \n\nMeredith Monk: Quarry: The Rally (Live\, 1977) \n\n

SUMMARY:David Hughes: Schubertiade
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present Philadelphia based piano virtuoso David Hughes performing a “Schubertiade” – a program that explores the music and spirit of Franz Schubert alongside work by contemporary composers inspired by his music. Victor Hugo famously wrote that “forty is the old age of youth\, fifty the youth of old age.” This program\, offered on the occasion of Hughes’ own 40th birthday\, emphasizes the coexistence of past and future\, a constant search for meaning\, and the eternal\, intense introspection emblematic of Schubert’s music. \n\nPROGRAM \nHelmut Lachenmann: Schubert Variations (1956)\nLee Hoiby: Schubert Variations\, op. 35 (1981)\nFranz Schubert: Impromptu in A-flat Major\, D. 935 no. 2\nEdison Denisov: Variations on a Theme by Schubert (1986) with Thomas Kraines\, cello\nSchubert: Gretchen am Spinnrade\, D. 118 with Anaïs Naharro-Murphy\, soprano\nEric Wubbels: gretchen am spinnrade (2016) with Thomas Kraines\, cello\nSchubert: Sonata in B-Flat\, D. 960 \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \nDavid Hughes has performed at the Kennedy Center\, Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw and the Spanish Embassy in Washington\, DC. He has been featured on Philadelphia’s WRTI radio station in an hour-long segment of solo repertoire. He can also be heard playing four different keyboard instruments on John Zorn’s violin concerto\, “Contes de Fées\,” on the Tzadik label. He is a founding member of Arcana New Music Ensemble\, a Philadelphia-based ensemble dedicated to presenting concerts of modern and lesser-known music. Mr. Hughes has a strong interest in contemporary music and received third prize in the Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition—one of the world’s premier competitions for modern music—as a member of Outer Banks Duo with saxophonist Stacy Wilson. This was followed by the release of their debut CD\, L’Incandescence. He is also a past recipient of a fellowship to the Tanglewood Music Center and a prizewinner in the MTNA National Chamber Music Competition. He holds a doctoral degree in piano performance from Indiana University.

SUMMARY:Mystical Paths
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is excited to present Ekmeles Vocal Ensemble performing Mystical Paths\, a program of music with spiritual focuses as diverse as Sufism\, silence\, cooking\, and humor. Taylor Brook’s Motorman Sextet anchors the program\, as an expressive setting of the most nostalgic episodes from David Ohle’s cult novel Motorman. Forrest Pierce’s Tighten to Nothing explores the composer’s Sufism through a text by medieval Dutch mystic Hadewijch II. Lucia Ronchetti’s Anatra al sal\, heard here in its U.S. premiere\, is a raucous exposition on cooking (the title is Duck with salt). Agata Zubel’s Madrigals\, another U.S. premiere\, draws from the composer’s experience as a renowned contemporary vocalist. Evan Johnson’s 3 in ad abundantiam\, and vo mesurando\, are extraordinarily delicate works that play on the edge of sound and silence\, questioning the very nature of vocal performance. \n\nPROGRAM\nTaylor Brook – Motorman Sextet\nForrest Pierce – Tighten to Nothing\nAgata Zubel – The Alphabet of the Ars Brevis\nEvan Johnson – 3 in ad abundantiam\nEvan Johnson – vo mesurando\nLucia Ronchetti – Antara al sal \n\nABOUT THE PERFORMERS\nEkmeles is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of new and rarely-heard works\, and gems of the historical avant garde. New York is home to a vibrant instrumental New Music scene\, with a relative paucity of vocal music. Ekmeles was founded to fill the gap by presenting new a cappella repertoire for solo voices\, and by collaborating with these instrumental ensembles.  Director Jeffrey Gavett brings a hybrid vision to the group: he is an accomplished ensemble singer and performer of new works\, and holds degrees from Westminster Choir College and Manhattan School of Music’s Contemporary Performance Program. He has assembled a virtuoso group of colleagues who bring their own diverse backgrounds to bear on the unique challenges of this essential and neglected repertoire.

SUMMARY:Joshua Stamper's color as time
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present color as time\, an ensemble led by Philadelphia composer / performer Joshua Stamper that inhabits the blur between classical\, jazz\, folk\, and experimental textures. Playing at the edges of the composed and the improvised\, the music is inspired by Elliott Carter’s and Olivier Messiaen’s time-stretching compositional techniques\, immersed in a love for contrapuntal textures\, and occupies a harmonic world redolent of jazz musicians from Bill Evans to Duke Ellington to Wayne Shorter. \n\n\n\nPaul Arbogast – trombones\nBethany Brooks – piano\, keyboards\, accordion\nChristopher McDonald – keyboards\, electronics\, piano\nAnthony Nigro – woodwinds\nMatt Scarano – drums\nJoshua Stamper – guitar\, double-bass\, compositions\n\n\nBowerbird’s Steinway Model O piano was donated in honor of Virginia Francis Lease.\n\nthis light used to be a mountain by color as time

SUMMARY:Strange City: Music of Claude Vivier
DESCRIPTION:The music of the Canadian composer Claude Vivier (1948-1983) combines diverse influences–from the the cerebral constructions of the European avant-garde to exoticist borrowings from East Asia– into a haunting and inimitable artistic voice. Vivier’s intense and colorful music mirrors his life as an eccentric and bon vivant who met a tragic death at the age of 34. The Arcana New Music Ensemble will present a selection of this rarely performed music\, ranging from the shatteringly virtuosic piano work Shiraz to the ritualistic intonations of Et je reverrai cette ville étrange (“And I will see this strange city again”)\, which is based\, like much of his music\, on the unfolding elaboration of a single melodic line. \nBowerbird’s Steinway Model O piano was donated in honor of Virginia Francis Lease. \n\nPROGRAM \nGreeting Music\nNicholas Handahl\, flute\nEvan Ocheret\, oboe\nErin Busch\, cello\nDavid Hughes\, piano\nAndy Thierauf\, percussion \nHymnen An Die Nacht\nAlize Rozsnyai\, soprano\nDavid Hughes\, piano \nShiraz\nDavid Hughes\, piano \nPulau Dewata\nDavid Hughes\, piano\nAndy Thierauf\, percussion\nAshley Tini\, percussion \nEt Je Reverrai Cette Ville Étrange\nTessa Ellis\, trumpet\nEmma Hey\, viola\nErin Busch\, cello\nDavi Ciriaco\, bass\nDavid Hughes\, piano\nAndy Thierauf\, percussion \n\n\n  \nABOUT THE COMPOSER\nMany consider Claude Vivier the greatest composer Canada has yet produced. At the age of 34\, he was the victim of a shocking murder\, leaving behind some 49 compositions in a wide range of genres\, including opera\, orchestral works\, and chamber pieces. György Ligeti once called Vivier “the finest French composer of his generation.” \nBorn in Montréal of unknown parents\, Vivier was adopted at the age of three. After being expelled from a seminary at sixteen for “immature behavior”—from an early age\, Vivier was open about his homosexuality—he studied at the Conservatoire de Musique in Montréal\, where his teachers included Gilles Tremblay (composition) and Irving Heller (piano). In 1971\, Vivier left Canada for Europe\, studying electroacoustic music with Gottfried Michael Koenig in Utrecht\, and composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen in Cologne. Although Vivier was influenced by the latter\, he nonetheless developed a highly personal language. Chants\, composed during this period\, represented for him “the first moment of my existence as a composer.” \nIn the fall of 1976\, Vivier took a long trip through Asia. A visit to Bali caused him to reevaluate his ideas concerning the role of the artist in society\, initiating a new period in his stylistic evolution. In the wake of this journey he wrote Shiraz (1977) for piano\, Orion (1979) for orchestra\, and his opera Kopernikus (1978–79). Above all\, it was in his cycle of pieces for voice and instrumental ensemble\, particularly Lonely Child (1980) and Prologue pour un Marco Polo (1981) that Vivier’s unique style crystallized. In a New York Times profile\, Paul Griffiths observed\, “The harmonic auras are suddenly more complex\, and the fantastic orchestration is unlike anything in Vivier’s earlier music\, or anyone else’s. Perhaps he found it by listening intently to bells and gongs\, for the huge chords that march along—around—the voice commonly have deep fundamentals with a fizz of interfering higher tones\, rather like metallic resonances.” During this period\, Vivier began to create texts in an invented language\, mirroring the singularity of his musical idiom. \nVivier spent the last months of his life in Paris. On March 12\, 1983\, Vivier was found stabbed to death in his apartment. His murderer\, a 19-year-old man who may have been a prospective lover\, was later caught and sentenced. \nVivier advocates include Mauricio Kagel\, Kent Nagano\, Reinbert de Leeuw\, David Robertson\, and Dawn Upshaw. Vivier’s music featured prominently in Holland Festival 2005\, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra opened its 2005–06 season with Lonely Child\, with David Robertson conducting and Dawn Upshaw as the soprano soloist. In 2005\, the Montréal Symphony Orchestra inaugurated the Claude Vivier National Prize for the best work by a Canadian composer. SUMMARY:Madrigals and Animals
DESCRIPTION:WEATHER UPDATE: CONCERT IS HAPPENING AS PLANNED.   \nBowerbird is pleased to present the the extraordinary vocal ensemble Ekmeles performing Madrigals and Animals\, a program celebrating the ongoing history of madrigals – the complex multi-part songs born during the Renaissance period known for their creative text setting (including imitating animals calls).  Karola Obermüller’s mass:distance:time relates directly to this history\, with flickers of Machaut’s mass\, and text by renaissance writer Ungaretti. Salvatore Sciarrino’s 12 Madrigali is an epic exploration of the composer’s signature sound world of filigree and glissando\, and will be heard here in its U.S. premiere. Karola Bauckholt’s Instinkt\, also heard for the first time in the U.S.\, blurs the line between animal vocalization and contemporary music. Finally\, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf’s void – un delitto italiano dramatizes in madrigal form the murder of Italian artist Pier Paolo Pasolini. \n\n\n\nPROGRAM \nmass:distance:time – Karola Obermüller \nvoid – un delitto italiano –  Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf \n12 Madrigali – Salvatore Sciarrino \nInstinkt – Carola Bauckholt \n\nABOUT THE PERFORMERS \nCharlotte Mundy\, soprano\nElisa Sutherland\, mezzo soprano\nTim Keeler\, countertenor\nNickolas Karageorgiou\, tenor\nJeffrey Gavett\, baritone and director\nSteven Hrycelak\, bass \nEkmeles is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of new and rarely-heard works\, and gems of the historical avant garde.

SUMMARY:Ben Patterson: Methods and Processes
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird and the Arcana New Music Ensemble are excited to present the music of Ben Patterson (1934-2016)\, an important and under-recognized leader of the early Fluxus movement\, an international\, interdisciplinary community of experimental artists that began in the early 1960s. The program represents Patterson’s wide range of compositional strategies.  For example – Paper Piece (for 1 to 5 performers) is a text score that invites musicians to –  “shake\, break\, tear\, crumple” – paper in an improvisatory exploration of its sonic properties.  String Music on the other hand is a graphic score with detailed performance instructions and intricate notation more reminiscent of Stockhausen’s Kontakte. \nEarly in Patterson’s career\, as an African American classically trained double bassist\, he sought to “break the color barrier” and be the first black musician to play in an American symphony orchestra. As Patterson noted\, “in the end\, even though such a famous conductor as Leopold Stokowski fought strongly on my behalf\, America was not yet ready for a black symphony musician\, and so I went to Canada.”  During his initial brush with expatriate life\, Patterson performed as a contrabassist with the Halifax Symphony Orchestra and the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra\, and also became involved with electronic music\, working in Ottawa with Canadian pioneer Hugh Le Caine and performing his own experiments. \nIn 1960 he moved to Europe  and was active in the contemporary music scene\, performing in festivals in Cologne\, Paris\, Venice\, Vienna and elsewhere.  During this pre-Fluxus period he created and performed some of his early seminal works: Paper Piece (1960)\, Lemons (1961) and Variations for Double-Bass (1961). Patterson assisted George Maciunas in organizing the historic 1962 Fluxus Festival in Wiesbaden. His interview with Emmett Williams – for the opening of this festival – was one of the first articles about Fluxus. In 1963 Patterson moved to New York\, where he participated in Fluxus manifestations until the late 1960s – when he returned to pursue “an ordinary life.” \nDuring the next two decades he pursued a career in arts administration – managing a variety of music\, theater\, and dance companies and serving as administrator or consultant to municipal\, state\, and federal arts funding agencies. Although he remained outside the Fluxus scene during this period\, he did occasionally surface with performances and new works for such events as the 20th Anniversary Fluxus Festival in Wiesbaden in 1982 and the 1983 Bienal de Sao Paulo\, Brazil\, and has been well represented in the various exhibitions throughout the USA of the Silverman collection. \nAfter a nearly twenty-year hiatus\, Patterson reemerged in the late 1980s to resume his career as an artist. In 1989\, Patterson returned to Europe to live\, creating a vast repository of scores\, paintings\, and sculptures. He has exhibited or performed widely in major and minor venues in New York\, Brisbane\, Prague\, Winnipeg\, Tusa (Sicily)\, Athens\, Kassel\, and elsewhere.   \n  \n\nTHE PROGRAM \nVariations for Double Bass (1961-62) \nString Music (1960) \nDuo for Voice and String Instrument (1961) \nSimple Opera (1996) \nPond (1962) \nPaper Piece (1960) \nOverture (1961) \nA Disturbing Composition (1961) \n\nARCANA NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE \nAnthony Bob\, flute\nErin Busch\, cello\nVeronica Jurkiewicz\, viola\nJosh Machiz\, bass\nTara Middleton\, violin and voice\nDavid Middleton\, electric guitar and bass\nAndy Thierauf\, percussion \nThe Arcana New Music Ensemble performs interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional music in interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional spaces. SUMMARY:Gavin Bryars: Laude
DESCRIPTION:… The music of Gavin Bryars falls under no category. It is mongrel\, full of sensuality and wit and is deeply moving. He allows you to witness new wonders in the sounds around you by approaching them from a completely new angle. With a third ear maybe… Michael Ondaatj \nArcana performs Gavin Bryars medieval inspired “Laude” (songs) with improvised interludes by electronic musician Jesse Kudler. \nEnglish composer Gavin Bryars (b. 1943) emerged in the late 60s\, playing bass with improvisers Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley\, and working with composers John Cage\, Cornelius Cardew and John White. His first major works – The Sinking of the Titanic (1969)\, originally released on Brian Eno’s Obscure label in 1975\, and Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet (1971) – were remarkable for their juxtaposition of music concrete and found sounds with rich\, beautiful harmonies. \nSince 2001 Bryars has been writing a number of pieces based on a large collection of 13th century ‘Laude’ -short mediaeval devotional songs to the Virgin Mary. Bryars notes\, “Over the last few years I have written a number of pieces for unaccompanied voice based on the texts and format of the “lauda”\, a large collection of songs which appears in a manuscript collection from thirteenth-century Cortona. These laude are religious (but non-liturgical) songs that were performed outside churches and in other public places. In setting these texts for voice I do not imitate the style of the original but rather the spirit and form\, and also relish the challenge of writing something quite austere and self sufficient.” \n\nPROGRAM \nLauda Dolce II for solo viola \nIt Never Rains for electric guitar\, viola\, cello\, double bass \nTre Lauda Dolce for solo cello \nLaude Cortonese Vol. 3 for soprano\, tenor\, viola\, cello\, and double bass \nLauda: The Flower of Friendship for electric guitar\, viola\, cello\, double bass \n\nTHE PERFORMERS\nAlize Rozsnyai\, soprano\nBryan Umberto Hoyos\, tenor\nBrendan Evans\, electric guitar\nVeronica Jurkiewicz\, viola\nJulia Morelli\, cello\nMatt Engle\, double bass \nand\nJesse Kudler\, electronics \nThe Arcana New Music Ensemble is an ensemble for performing interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional music in interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional spaces. SUMMARY:Mauricio Kagel's "Ludwig van"
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is excited to present Ludwig Van\, Mauricio Kagel’s quirky and surreal film about Beethoven returning to Bonn\, Germany on the occasion of his bicentenary. According to Gramophone\, “at first it’s a laugh a minute… then Kagel’s film turns dark”. \nLudwig van (full title: Ludwig van: A report; German: Ludwig van: ein Bericht) was filmed in 1969\, it was first screened the following year. The work was commissioned by Westdeutscher Rundfunk for the bicentennial celebrations of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven in 1970. The film examines the reception of the composer and his works and how he has become a consumer product of the culture industry. The soundtrack\, by Kagel\, is an arrangement of fragments of Beethoven’s works\, modified as if heard by the deaf composer himself. Prominent contemporary artists including Dieter Roth\, Stefan Wewerka\, Robert Filliou\, and Joseph Beuys were involved in the design and make cameos. \nA deconstructive analysis suggests the film investigates Beethoven as a cultural icon\, revered yet exploited; the use and misuse of his works\, including their appropriation to advance nationalist agendas; the difficulties and anxieties of influence performers face; Beethoven scholarship and attempts to “tame” the composer to accord with bourgeois ideals; and the difficulties of peering through the myths to catch a glimpse of the “real” Beethoven. Kagel uses the term Musealisierung or “musealisation” in speaking of the Beethoven cult\, the term used by Theodor W. Adorno to indicate that “museums are the family sepulchres of works of art” \nThis event is part of Sound Machines.

SUMMARY:Morton Feldman: Three Voices
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is excited to present the Philadelphia premiere of the Quince Vocal Ensemble performing Morton Feldman’s “Three Voices” with all three parts performed live. Feldman’s “Three Voices” was written for the experimental vocalist and composer Joan LaBarbara in 1982. The original concept involved the live performer singing along with two pre-recorded parts projected through on-stage amplifiers\, creating an effect of three individual “voices”\, all with the same origin (Ms. LaBarbara). Three Voices is indeed a challenging and ground-breaking work\, and has very rarely been performed live with three singers due to its nearly impossible demands on the human voice and psyche – impeccable rhythmic concentration\, shrewd attention to tuning\, and the ability to sound as one voice in three parts. The text is based on Frank O’Hara’s poem\, Wind\, and shapes\, twists\, and morphs short phrases from the poem into an hour-long musical experience.

SUMMARY:Friction Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to welcome San Francisco’s Friction Quartet to their premiere Philadelphia performance. The program will feature the world premiere of a new string quartet by New Zealander composer (and Philadelphia based) Rosie Langabeer. Opening the evening will be Murmuration celebrating the debut album\, “Revised Notes” \nFRICTION QUARTET\nOtis Harriel\, Violin; Kevin Rogers\, Violin;\nTaija Warbelow\, Viola; Doug Machiz\, Cello \nplus MURMURATION\nRussell Kotcher\, violin/piano; Joshua Machiz\, double bass; Eric Coyne\, cello/piano \nPROGRAM\nLudwig van Beethoven: Grosse Fuge\nRosie Langabeer: Occulmente (World Premiere)\nPiers Hellawell: The Still Dancers \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\nThe San Francisco Chronicle has praised the Friction Quartet for its “high-octane music making” and “fine blend of rhythmic ferocity and tonal flair.” Dedicated to working with living composers\, the quartet has given more than 70 world-premiere performances and commissioned 32 works since its formation in 2011. The Friction Quartet works outside the traditional string quartet model by performing arrangements of pop music\, making use of digital sound processing\, and combining music with other media. In 2016\, the ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the Kronos Quartet’s groundbreaking initiative Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire. \nFounded in Philadelphia in 2011\, Murmuration is an improvisational instrumental chamber ensemble that blends classical\, ambient\, and pop elements into a sound ranging from Debussy to The Eurythmics. They have performed in a variety of venues across the region\, and have participated in a wide range collaborations that have included either dance\, spoken word\, or film. Members include Russell Kotcher\, violin/piano; Joshua Machiz\, double bass; Eric Coyne\, cello/piano. Their debut album\, Revised Notes\, is due for release in March\, 2018. Revised Notes is a collection of in-studio improvisations that were recorded at Turtle Studios in Philadelphia in the summer of 2015. Each track began as an improvisation\, or a section of a large-scale improvisation. Some were edited with overdubs\, enhanced or reduced reverb\, and various filters. Others remain nearly as they were with minimal to no editing. Rather than containing numerous large-scale pieces\, the goal of the album is to give listeners a sampling of the variety of moods\, characters\, and sound-scapes that Murmuration creates in its music.

SUMMARY:Tom Johnson: Rational Melodies
DESCRIPTION:The American composer Tom Johnson (b. 1939) has made a career of quite literally composing by numbers. Motivated by mathematical concepts such as self-similarity\, transformations\, and tiling patterns\, Johnson’s compositions are rigorously formalistic\, but his use of repetition and familiar musical materials makes the underlying processes recognizable and (usually) enjoyable. The centerpiece of this concert is Johnson’s 1982 work Rational Melodies\, a set of 21 short pieces each consisting of a single melodic part generated by more or less complicated mathematical procedures\, creating perceptual patterns that both challenge and enchant the ears. \nTHE PROGRAM \nJohnson: Counting Keys (1982-89)\nDavid Hughes\, piano \nJohnson: Rational Melodies (1982)\nTessa Ellis\, trumpet\nJoe Dvorak\, clarinet\nRJ McGhee\, trombone\nDavid Middleton\, bass guitar\nDominic Panunto\, bassoon \nJohnson: Block Design for Piano (2005)\nDavid Hughes\, piano \nABOUT THE PERFORMERS\nThe Arcana New Music Ensemble is Bowerbird’s resident ensemble for performing interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional music in interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional spaces. SUMMARY:Wild Combination
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is excited to present a screening of “Wild Combination”\, director Matt Wolf’s visually absorbing portrait of the seminal avant-garde composer\, singer-songwriter\, cellist\, and disco producer Arthur Russell. Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992\, Arthur prolifically created music that spanned both pop and the transcendent possibilities of abstract art. Now\, over fifteen years since his passing\, Arthur’s work is finally finding its audience. Wolf incorporates rare archival footage and commentary from Arthur’s family\, friends\, and closest collaborators – including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg – to tell this poignant and important story.

SUMMARY:The World According to Sound
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present The World According to Sound\, an immersive sonic experience by Sam Harnett and Chris Hoff. During the performance\, the audience sits blindfolded at the center of a ring of loudspeakers. Listeners will be transported inside another person’s head\, and back in time a hundred years to the streets of Berlin. They’ll fly out into space and bore deep inside the bowels of the earth. There is a musical washing machine\, sonorous sporting events\, and the disturbing howl Marco Polo heard while crossing the Gobi Desert. There’s absolutely nothing to see. It will be a spectacle entirely for the ears. \nSam Harnett is a reporter for KQED and a frequent contributor to Marketplace\, and NPR programs like Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Chris Hoff is the senior engineer and sound designer for Crosscurrents on KALW. Two years ago they set out to create a radio show that did not rely on narrative and storytelling; a program that would focus on sound instead of language. They are now touring with their live show\, performing and talking with students about sound\, modern radio\, and the current state of media.

SUMMARY:Kazuhisa Uchihashi + Daniel Fishkin
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the international collaboration between daxophone masters Daniel Fishkin (Philadelphia) and Kazuhisa Uchihashi (Japan). \n  \nThe daxophone is a thin hardwood strip played with a bow\, created by German improviser/inventor Hans Reichel in 1987. The instrument’s sound\, somewhere between a cello and a badger\, ranges from furtive gurgles to wild screams. In 2005\, Daniel Fishkin fell in love with this instrument and built one of his own. Eventually\, he built hundreds of daxophones\, becoming attuned to the sonic qualities of wood species and carved shapes. After Reichel’s death\, the fate of this instrument became unclear. Kazuhisa Uchihashi\, a creative partner of Reichel\, is now a leading proponent of the daxophone. Uchihashi performs on Reichel’s instruments\, in addition to presenting installations and exhibits about the daxophone. In 2015\, Fishkin met Uchihashi in Berlin. They represent different “schools” of daxophone—the new and the old\, the postmodern and classical. This is their first public performance. \nKazuhisa Uchihashi (guitar\,daxophone) Born in Osaka\, Japan in 1959\, Uchihashi plays a huge variety of music\, having a distinctive musical voice in rock\, jazz and improvised music. He composes widely for film\, theatre and dance\, including 30 years of work with the Japanese theatre group Ishina. He has worked worldwide with musicians including Hans Reichel\, Fred Frith\, Zeena Parkins\, Han Bennink\, Derek Bailey\,Shelley Hirsch \,Christian Marclay and hundreds of improvisers. He organized the legendary Japanese power trio Altered States\, active for over 27 years\, which also worked inside Otomo Yoshihide’s Ground Zero in the 1990s. In recent years\, he has focused on pan-asian identity in music. Since 2010 he’s traveled to Indonesia\, Thailand and China to create special collaborative projects with local musicians. Mahanyawa is one of the best collaboration unit with SENYAWA from Indonesia. His special instrument\, the daxophone\, is a creation of the late guitarist/inventor\, Hans Reichel\, who was a creative partner of Uchihashi. \nDaniel Fishkin (daxophone)\nDaniel Fishkin’s ears are ringing. Composer\, sound artist\, and instrument builder. Completely ambivalent about music. Daniel studied with composer Maryanne Amacher and with multi-instrumentalist Mark Stewart. He has performed as a soloist on modular synthesizer with the American Symphony Orchestra\, developed sound installations in abandoned concert halls\, and played innumerable basement punk shows. Daniel’s lifework investigating the aesthetics of hearing damage has received international press (Nature Journal\, 2014); as an ally in the search for a cure\, he has been awarded the title of “tinnitus ambassador” by the Deutsche Tinnitus-Stiftung. Recent activities include a Project Grant from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Daniel received his MA in Music Composition from Wesleyan University\, has taught analog synthesis at Bard College\, and\, as fate would have it\, is now pursuing his PhD at University of California\, San Diego.

DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT \nBowerbird and Sebastian Petsu are pleased to welcome Tether and Jo Nelson to the Double Decker Music Series. Join us on Sunday\, September 10th at 8:00 p.m. (rain date\, September 12th) for a unique and intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Before\, between\, and after the music\, tour guide Sebastian Darkly Petsu will share dry wit and history about the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nTether is a music project of Lauren Pakradooni\, who performs and records using handmade cassette tape loops onto which she records various instruments and vocals. She layers these loops into compositions that waver between melodic and concrete. \nhttps://hotreleases.bandcamp.com/album/mirror-finish\nhttps://soundcloud.com/p-a-k-1 \n  \nJo Nelson is a country singer from Philadelphia. As a side project of percussionist and producer Ashley Tini\, she explores the past by paying homage to the great songwriters of Appalachia\, and the deep south. Her work seeks to create altered states by challenging concepts of ritual and their relation to time and place. By highlighting the ol’ minimalist approach to story telling and tasteful harmony\, we find that Jo Nelson is a feeling. As a percussionist\, she has recorded and performed the works of George Crumb\, Pauline Oliveros\, Iannis Xenakis\, Mauricio Kagel\, Phillip Glass\, So Percussion\, Mohammad Fairouz\, Stuart Saunders Smith\, Milford Graves\, Susie Ibarra\, Matthew Welch\, Dave Molk and Sarah Hennies. SUMMARY:DDMS14: Wolf Dem and Dan Blacksberg & Tessa Ellis
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT\nBowerbird and Sebastian Petsu are pleased to welcome WOLF DEM\, and Tessa Ellis and Dan Blacksberg to the Double Decker Music Series. Join us on Sunday\, July 30th at 8:00 p.m. (rain date\, July 31st) for a unique and intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Using both digital and analog tools and drawing on a highly diverse range of influences\, WOLF DEM grew from its original concept- “what your dreams would sound like if you fell asleep in an old warehouse where someone had left a dancehall station playing on the radio”- into a focused aesthetic\, at once chaotic and hypnotic\, sitting at the intersection of Caribbean music\, techno\, noise\, and field recordings. Past releases include a record for Great Circles and cassettes for Vague Audio Tapes and End Result Productions; later this summer\, they’re slated to release a new cassette with Embalming Lately. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/wolf-dem/wolf-dem-live-inciting-hq-dec2016\nhttps://soundcloud.com/great-circles/grcr-011-wolf-dem-hydrophobia-12-preview \nCalled “A virtuosic technician with abundant creativity\,” Dan Blacksberg has become a major voice carving out new paths in both Jewish and experimental music. Primarily through his trombone playing\, but also as a composer\, educator\, concert organizer\, and sometimes record producer\, Dan has excited audiences and empowered musicians in his hometown of Philadelphia\, and around the world. From performing and recording with traditional klezmer musicians like Elaine Hoffman Watts and Adrienne Cooper\, to experimentalists George Lewis and Anthony Braxton\, to performing with his own groups Electric Simcha and Deveykus ()the worlds only hardcore simcha band and Hasidic doom-metal band respectively)\, his work spans from the traditional to the avant-garde and radical spaces in between. \nwww.danblacksberg.com\nhttps://soundcloud.com/dan-blacksberg/shaking \nTessa Ellis is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and is building a career as a freelance artist in Philadelphia. Passionate about performing works written by living composers\, she is a member of the Arcana New Music Ensemble and Opus 5. Tessa is spending the next academic year as a Community Artist Fellow focusing on early childhood music education in partnership with William Cramp Elementary and Project Home. \nhttp://www.sebastianpetsu.com/doubledecker/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/03_Toying__Ventriloquizing_.mp3

SUMMARY:The Music of Moondog
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT \nBowerbird is pleased to present “The Music of Moondog”\, a survey of the idiosyncratic rounds and songs by composer Louis Thomas Hardin Jr (1916 – 1999). The eccentric street musician known as Moondog dressed in Viking garb and regularly performed on the sidewalks of New York’s Sixth Avenue. This concert is the debut performance of the Arcana New Music Ensemble. \n  \nARCANA NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE \nKatie Ambacher\, flute\nNicholas McNamara\, alto saxophone\nAaron Stewart\, tenor saxophone\nMark Zelesky\, baritone saxophone\nTessa Ellis\, trumpet\nElizabeth Huston\, harp\nEric Derr\, percussion\nAndy Thierauf\, percussion\nJune Bender\, violin\nJoshua Machiz\, double bass \n  \nTHE COMPOSER \nLouis Thomas Hardin\, Jr.\, better known as Moondog\, is one of the most famous and influential outsider musicians of the twentieth century. Born in Kansas to a devoutly religious family\, Hardin was blinded at age 16 when he dug up a live dynamite cap. For 30 years\, from the early 1940s to the early 1970s\, he lived in New York City\, where he became a well-known street performer known\, thanks to his Nordic garb\, as “the Viking of Sixth Avenue.” During this time he recorded several albums and won the respect of many important musicians\, including Leonard Bernstein\, Charlie Parker (for whom he wrote the piece “Bird’s Lament”)\, and Philip Glass (with whom he briefly shared an apartment). From 1974 until his death in 1999\, Moondog lived primarily in Germany\, where he enjoyed the most stable and productive creative period of his life. Celebrated for his diverse body of work that combines– among other influences– the rhythmic energy of jazz\, the ritualistic intensity of Native American tribal music\, and classical principles of counterpoint\, Moondog’s music is at once uncategorizable and instantly identifiable. \n  \nABOUT ARCANA \nFounded in 2016\, the Arcana New Music Ensemble is a group of Philadelphia-based musicians dedicated to presenting interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional music in interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional places. SUMMARY:Erik Ruin's Long/Gone (100 ft paper-cut scroll)
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT \nCurrently over 100 feet in length\, LONG/GONE is a single intricately-cut piece of paper which flows freely from image to image. Narratives and scenarios (often drawn from classic works of literature from Homer to Dante) emerge and collapse and spill over and into each other. \nIn performance\, Erik scrolls the paper-cut continually across the surface of an over-head projector\, creating an epic and immersive shadow-show. His musical group\, the Ominous Cloud Ensemble\, will provide a live soundtrack. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nErik Ruin is a Michigan-raised\, Philadelphia-based printmaker\, shadow puppeteer\, paper-cut artist\, etc.\, who has been lauded by the New York Times for his “spell-binding cut-paper animations.” His work oscillates between the poles of apocalyptic anxieties and utopian yearnings\, with an emphasis on empathy\, transcendence and obsessive detail. He frequently works collaboratively with musicians\, theater performers\, other artists and activist campaigns. He is a founding member of the international Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative\, and co-author of the book Paths Toward Utopia: Graphic Explorations of Everyday Anarchism (w/ Cindy Milstein\, PM Press\, 2012). \nErik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble is an ever-evolving\, collectively-improvising large ensemble for projections and music\, led by visual artist Erik Ruin. Erik manipulates intricate paper-cuts and painted films on overhead projectors to create abstract landscapes and fragmentary scenes that are nonetheless charged with meaning\, merging with music that ranges from dark atmospherics to ecstatic peaks of dissonance. Members of the ensemble include a rotating cast of Philly’s finest musicians\, who have collaborated with everyone from Anthony Braxton to the Sun Ra Arkestra\, Chris Forsyth to Bardo Pond. \nOminous Cloud Ensemble: \nTara Middleton\, voice\nDM Hotep\, guitar\nReid Hoffman\, guitar\nNick Millevoi\, guitar\nMyles Donovan\, viola\, harp\nJesse Sparhawk\, harp\, banjo\nJulius Masri\, electronics\, kamancheh\nQuinn Collins\, bass\nScott Verrastro\, drums\, percussion

The culmination of more than three years of research\, this first iteration of this project will take place in Philadelphia in May 2017. Events include four major concerts – including several modern “premieres” of recently recovered works – and a multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring archival materials and work by ten contemporary artists who engage with Eastman and the fragmented nature of his legacy. \nMore information can be found here: https://www.thatwhichisfundamental.com
