Yutkevich\nCinematographer: Suren Shakhbazyan\nCourtesy Parajanov-Vartanov Institute. \nSergei Paradjanov (1924 – 1990) was a Soviet film director of Armenian descent who made a substantial contribution to Soviet cinematography through Ukrainian\, Armenian and Georgian cinema. He pioneered his own cinematic style by stepping outside socialist realism\, which was the only sanctioned art style within the USSR. His filmmaking and controversial lifestyle meant he was persecuted with his films regularly banned by Soviet authorities between 1965 and 1973.  \nThe Color of Pomegranates is based\, in part\, on the life and poetry of the eighteenth-century Armenian poet\, Sayat Nova (‘The King of Song’). Sergei Parajanov writes\, directs\, edits\, choreographs\, designs and creates every aspect of the film. It remains a masterpiece of cinema on account of being devoid of dialogue or camera movement and for its alluring imagery. The film was not seen internationally until 1977 due to Soviet censorship. Deyhim is internationally acclaimed for creating a unique sonic and vocal language imbued with a sense of ritual and the unknown\, encompassing music\, theatre\, dance\, media and film. Deyhim’s career began as an intern at the Festival of Arts\, Shiraz-Persepolis and training with the Iranian National Ballet Company before joining the Bejart Ballet School\, Mudra. Deyhim’s early iconic work Desert Equations: Azax/Attra combines her sublime voice and solo performance and the electronic wizardry of US composer Horowitz\, wonderfully blending the duo’s multiple sources\, including their experiences at the epicentre of New York’s early ‘80s avantgarde music and theatre scene. The haunting and futuristic Azax/Attra album prompted writer Paul Bowles to wonder: “Was this composed under the influence of Majoun?”. It led to a series of music/theatre performances including Desert Equations: Azax/Attra at New York’s important experimental La MaMa Theatre. DESCRIPTION:The First World Festival of Negro Arts (1968) 40 minutes  \nWriter/Director: William Greaves\nProducer: Motion Picture and Television Service of the United States Information Agency\nCinematographer: Georges Bracher\, William Greaves\nCourtesy William Greaves Productions  \nWilliam Greaves (1926 – 2014) was a Harlem-born American documentary filmmaker\, writer\, producer and a pioneer of African American filmmaking. His film The First World Festival of Negro Arts is a Black history treasure and documents the landscape of the seminal performance festival held in Dakar\, Senegal\, in 1966\, one year prior to the inauguration of Shiraz-Persepolis. The festivals at Dakar and Shiraz-Persepolis shared a similar decolonising ethos. The film was officially commissioned to document the events that attracted over two thousand writers\, artists and performers from Africa and the African diaspora\, including: Duke Ellington\, Langston Hughes\, Alvin Ailey\, Aime Cesaire\, Leopold Senghor and other artists\, performers and dignitaries from thirty countries.  \nGreaves began his career as a Broadway actor and a member of The Actor’s Studio. He later served as executive producer and co-host of the Black Journal television programme for which he was awarded an Emmy in 1970. His recent film\, Ralph Bunche:  An American Odyssey (2001)\, documents the life and historic achievements of Dr. Ralph Johnson Bunche (1903-1971) the legendary African American Nobel prize-winning\, scholar turned statesman who contributed to international diplomacy\, decolonization\, peacekeeping\, and human rights in pre-civil rights America. Since 2010 he has served as Director of Music and Organist at Christ Church\, Philadelphia\, where he oversaw the installation and dedication of a splendid new pipe organ\, C.B. Fisk’s Op. 150. As soloist and accompanist\, Parker has performed with a wide range of artists\, including the International Contemporary Ensemble\, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, and Singing City Choir. He holds degrees from Duke University\, the Yale School of Music/Institute of Sacred Music\, and the Brussels Conservatory\, where he studied on a Fulbright Fellowship. A recent winner of the King’s Singers New Music Prize for his setting of Malcolm Guite’s poem “The Singing Bowl\,” Kitterman is a composer with wide-ranging interests and influences. His writing is born out of a studied approach to improvisation\, a literary sensitivity\, and an ongoing commitment to providing fresh\, relevant material for musicians and audiences alike. DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present Franck Vigroux and Ulrich Krieger performing Dodécaèdre\, a new piece for electronics and amplified-processed saxophone at The Rotunda. Made of tectonic tensions\, beats\, and electronic textures the new work is a very personal approach to sonic exploration. Opening the evening will be a solo set by Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist Julius Masri. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \nUlrich Krieger is well known as a saxophone player in contemporary composed and free improvised music as well as a composer of chamber music and electronic music. His recent focus lies in the experimental fields and fringes of contemporary Pop culture: somewhere in the limbo between Noise and Heavy Metal\, Ambient and Silence. His original compositions go back and forth between Just Intonation\, Silent Music\, Noise\, Instrumental Electronic\, often asking for elaborate amplification\, and works in the limbo of Rock culture – not accepting stylistic boundaries. Krieger developed his own\, often amplified style of saxophone playing\, he calls ‘acoustic electronics’. He uses refined acoustic\, quasi-electronic sounds\, which then get processed\, the saxophone often becoming more an ‘analogue sampler’ rather than a traditional finger-virtuoso instrument. By amplifying his instrument in various ways\, he gets down to the ‘grains of the sounds’\, changing their identity and structure from within. \nFranck Vigroux is a multifaceted artist whose works range from experimental electronic music to modern composition and music theatre. Franck Vigroux‘s music is made of tectonic tensions\, beats\, electronic textures and a very personal approach to sonic exploration. He is equally prolific as a solo artist and as a collaborator\, he has worked with musician such as Elliott Sharp\, Mika Vainio\, Reinhold Friedl\, Ars Nova… Vigroux’s uniqueness comes from his artistic approach that integrates new media and performance arts. He designs transdisciplinary shows and audiovisual concerts\, collaborating with visual artists such as Antoine Schmitt and Kurt d’Haeseleer. \nJulius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi-instrumentalist\, performer and composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic/ linguistic/ somatic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and began studying with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola\, Elaine Hoffman-Watts\, and as an undergraduate at Bard College\, with AACM’s Thurman Barker\, Richard Teitelbaum\, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums\, circuit modified Casio keyboards\, Oud\, Kamancheh (aka Rabab\, Spike Fiddle)\, and various other instruments. In November 2021\, Julius released the album “The Arabic Room” under the project name Mephisto Halabi\, garnering international praise in music publications and websites including WIRE Magazine (Dec2021)\, PopMatters\, Radio al-Harra\, Foxy Digitalis\, and many others. \n\nThis is an “in person” event. Bowerbird is requiring all those attending to show proof of COVID 19 vaccination status (vaccination card or legible photo on your smartphone\, plus photo ID) and wear a mask during the entirety of the event. There will be no exceptions to this policy. After having played in rock bands\, a silent movie orchestra\, an Arabian ensemble and being inspired to play free improvised music by a shocking Eugene Chadbourne performance\, she went on to live in the US between 2000-2012\,  where she performed with dancers\, recorded and toured with folk psych band Espers\, sang Swedish traditional songs\, played concerts at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival\, the High Zero Festival of improvised music in Baltimore\, MD\, at the Improvised and Otherwise Festival in Brooklyn\, NY\, at Big Sur experimental festival in California and at Terrastock among others. Espvall has received grants for artist residencies in Mojacar\, Spain\, at CESTA in Tabor\, Czech Republic\, and at Binaural / Nodar\, Portugal\, and she was the recipient of an Individual Arts Award from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She has worked with Lukas Ligeti\, Fursaxa\, Damon & Naomi\, Bert Jansch\, Masaki Batoh (Ghost)\, Vashti Bunyan\,  Marissa Nadler\, Pauline Oliveros and many more. Now residing in Lisbon\, she has collaborated with musicians like Norberto Lobo\, Manuel Mota\, Sei Miguel\, and Vitor Rua\, among others. She currently plays with the improv collective Lantana\, that has collaborated with Lula Pena\, and performed at Lisboa Soa Festival in the Estufa Fria\, at the Jazz Ao Centro Festival in Coimbra\, and at Jazz 2020\, Gulbenkian. She is also a member of the band Beautify Junkyards that released an album this year on British label GhostBox.  Espvall has done solo performances at Out.Fest\, ZDB\, Bar Irreal\, Damas and the Panteão\, and invited by Culturgest\, she recently created a solo piece for acoustic guitar\, as a part of the project Abrindo o Livro dos Sons\, a tribute to German composer Hans Otte.

There will be no tickets available at the door.   \nAfter moving from his native Seoul\, first to Germany to study music alongside the likes of Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage\, and then to the United States\, Nam June Paik lived what seems like the romantic archetype of the post-war New York artist. He drifted easily between avant-garde music\, film\, and fine art and helped in turn to create two new disciplines: video art and video installation. By 1962 he was a member of Fluxus and would collaborate with a litany of bright lights from Cage and Charlotte Moorman to Shigeko Kubota and Jud Yalkut. \nRidiculous Technology collects some of Paik’s most important early works\, with special emphasis on his connection with the burgeoning experimental music scene. In Beatles Electroniques\, Paik distorts imagery of the Beatles using a video synthesizer alongside an electronic soundtrack by Kenneth Werner composed of Beatles loops. Video Tape Study No. 3 critiques Lyndon B. Johnson to a score by David Behrman. Electronic Fables is one of Paik’s more visually beautiful and minimal productions featuring the voices of Marcel Duchamp\, John Cage\, Allen Ginsberg\, and Moondog\, among others. Waiting for Commercials features found footage of international commercials originally used as part of a Charlotte Moorman performance. Global Groove is perhaps Paik’s single-channel masterpiece\, a collage of original video\, his past work\, commercials\, dance\, popular music\, and contributions by Cage\, Stockhausen\, and Moorman. With his activity in the new music\, improvisation and experimental music scenes\, Nakatani has a long history of collaboration. He teaches master classes and lectures at universities and music conservatories around the world. Originally from Japan\, he makes his home in the desert town of Truth or Consequences\, New Mexico. Nakatani creates his distinctive music centered around his adapted bowed gong\, supported by an array of drums\, cymbals\, and singing bowls. In consort with his hand carved Kobo Bows\, it is an instrument he has spent decades developing. Nakatani approaches his orchestral project (NGO) as an arrangement of formations of vibrations\, incorporated in shimmering layers of silence and texture. Within this contemporary work\, one can still recognize the dramatic pacing\, formal elegance and space (ma) felt in traditional Japanese music.

He grew in a bicultural household\, always following a multitude of paths and perusals. He is mostly self-taught as a musician\, composer\, recording engineer\, and producer. He primarily plays electric bass\, drums\, percussion\, guitar\, synthesizers\, and all manner of sound-makers procured in life’s travels. He has recorded and performed with a diverse crew of artMakers\, Yoko Ono\, Laurie Anderson\, Beth Orton\, Colin Stetson\, Ben Frost\, Bonnie Prince Billy\, Damien Rice\, Jolie Holland\, JFDR\, Secret Chiefs 3\, Sam Amidon\, further and further. He has been an integral member of festival/residency/collective experiences such as the People Festival (the brainchild of Bon Iver\, The National\, and the Michelberger)\, the Eau Claires festival\, the Moers Festival. He has done work for dance and theater pieces\, such as the film Frozen River (Oscar-nominated and Sundance award-winning)\, Inkboat (a butoh crew from California/Switzerland)\, and visual artist Laleh Khorramian. This year alone\, he’ll teach in residence at BANFF\, the Oklahoma Center for Contemporary Arts\, the Monheim Triennale\, and very happily\, the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Currently based in Brooklyn and working out of the recording studio collective he founded and created\, Figure 8 Recording\, he has studied music extensively in Pakistan\, India\, Turkey\, Mexico\, Chile\, Japan\, Indonesia\, Morocco\, and Iceland.

His position as Assistant Teaching Professor in Computer Music carries a unique perspective\, bringing a non-linear approach and knowledge to the department by focusing on various modern forms of electronic music pedagogy\, while continuing to be an active force in the music industry. As a composer and producer\, his practice has lead to collaborations with the likes of De La Soul\, Alarm Will Sound Orchestra\, Saul Williams\, director Michael Mann (Miami Vice) and many others\, as well as being called for remixes from an eclectic list of giants\, including\, Meredith Monk\, Solange to Calvin Harris. Most recently collaborating with MacArthur Fellow\, Tyshawn Sorey for an upcoming album project. In his role as performer\, he has travelled globally playing thousands of venues and festivals\, including\, AfroPunk (NYC)\, Berghain (Berlin)\, MoogFest (Durham)\, Le Guess Who Festival (Utrecht) and The Kitchen (NYC). King was also the original DJ for the Grammy Award winning Digable Planets. Blacktronika : Afrofuturism In Electronic Music\, is a new UCSD lecture course\, created by King\, researching and honoring the people of color\, who have pioneered groundbreaking genres within the electronic music landscape. Genres span from Chicago House\, Detroit Techno and Drum & Bass music. Using his position in the industry\, the class has been attended by many\, including Questlove\, Julian Priester and Goldie.

The concert will feature the world premiere of a new music video of Rzewski’s “Coming Together” made by Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother) and video artist Bob Sweeney. The video was shot this spring on site at Eastern State Penitentiary and features a musical performance by the Arcana New Music Ensemble. The program will include rare archival recordings of Frederick Rzewski performing his own work\, as well as two rarely heard solo works – “Shtick” for solo saxophone and “Sixteen Sneakers” for solo viola. \nFrederic Rzewski’s minimalist masterpiece\, “Coming Together”\, was composed in response to the 1971 uprising at Attica Prison in upstate New York. Scored for narrator and open ensemble\, the work is based on a letter by Sam Melville\, one of the leaders of the Attica riots in which he was killed. The text reads: \nI think the combination of age and the greater coming together is responsible for the speed of the passing time. it’s six months now and i can tell you truthfully few periods in my life have passed so quickly. i am in excellent physical and emotional health. there are doubtless subtle surprises ahead but i feel secure and ready. As lovers will contrast their emotions in times of crisis\, so am i dealing with my environment. in the indifferent brutality\, incessant noise\, the experimental chemistry of food\, the ravings of lost hysterical men\, i can act with clarity and meaning. i am deliberate – sometimes even calculating – seldom employing histrionics except as a test of the reactions of others. i read much\, exercise\, talk to guards and inmates\, feeling for the inevitable direction of my life. \nFrederic Rzewski’s “Shtick” is a solo work for saxophone that contains allusions to folk and popular melodies\, including the Yiddish tune Yidl Mit’n Fidl (Yiddle with his Fiddle).  Also on the program is a “Sixteen Sneakers”\, a playful work for solo viola (or a small group of violas)\, that Rzewski composed for his daughter Esther. \n\nSupport for this project has been provided by the Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia. Connors has performed solo and with many veterans of independent music such as Alan Licht\, Thurston Moore\, Daniel Carter\, Kim Gordon\, Samara Lubelski\, Jandek and Keiji Haino. Connors has collaborated over the years with vocalist Suzanne Langille\, including in an avant blues band called Haunted House with guitarist Andrew Burnes and percussionist Neel Murgai. His recordings have been released on Family Vineyard\, Recital\, Northern Spy\, Drag City\, and other labels.

DESCRIPTION:This year\, Alash was scheduled to perform at The Rotunda on April 2nd but had to instead cancel the rest of their tour and return home. While they cannot perform in concert right now\, Alash will present a throat-singing demonstration with Q & A\, from their homes in Tuva! This will be a fun way for you to get to know the ensemble\, their singing methods\, and some history behind the songs. \nPlease note the earlier-than-usual event time of 11am Philly time. Since Tuva is 11 hours ahead of Philadelphia\, we had to schedule this accordingly. The added bonus is that children can hopefully join as well! \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. SPACE IS LIMITED. SUMMARY:Meredith Monk's Quarry
DESCRIPTION:This event was originally scheduled for Feb 26 but has been rescheduled for March 11. \nRightfully renowned as a composer\, vocalist\, choreographer\, and stage director\, Meredith Monk’s underseen films present their own inventive reflections on the cataclysms of history. Quarry began as a live multimedia opera in 1976 featuring a black and white short film of the same name directed by Monk. With the help of the New York Public Library’s initiative to document groundbreaking live performances\, Monk and Amram Nowak re-staged the work with Monk guiding the film’s camera movements and close-ups not normally found in “filmed theater.” In Quarry\, Monk continues her interest in abstracting her own Jewish history to create an anti-fascist narrative in which she portrays a sick child whose illness progresses in tandem with the rise of a dictator. He can also be heard playing four different keyboard instruments on John Zorn’s violin concerto\, “Contes de Fées\,” on the Tzadik label. He is a founding member of Arcana New Music Ensemble\, a Philadelphia-based ensemble dedicated to presenting concerts of modern and lesser-known music. Mr. Hughes has a strong interest in contemporary music and received third prize in the Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition—one of the world’s premier competitions for modern music—as a member of Outer Banks Duo with saxophonist Stacy Wilson. This was followed by the release of their debut CD\, L’Incandescence. He is also a past recipient of a fellowship to the Tanglewood Music Center and a prizewinner in the MTNA National Chamber Music Competition. He holds a doctoral degree in piano performance from Indiana University.

SUMMARY:The Magic Sun (Sun Ra)
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present an evening of screened and live audio visual shorts including the Philadelphia premiere of Phill Niblock’s newly mastered 1966 film The Magic Sun – an experimental work featuring Sun Ra and His Solar Arkestra that was produced using a unique negative process and ultra-tight close-ups on the moving hands and mouths of the musicians.  Also screened will be Philadelphia dance artist Terry Fox’s Citizens’ Footbook. He works primarily in MAX/MSP/Jitter\, node.js and webGL to build creative systems that are powered by technology. He’s fascinated by complex systems\, board games and history\, and\, on the whole\, is looking forward to the future. \nNora Gibson is a choreographer and video artistinterested in the beauty of the natural world\, as evidenced in mathematics and science\, and in working across artistic and academic disciplines to expand ballet’s reach. Gibson trained at Baltimore School for the Arts\, Chautauqua\, and NCSA\, and earned a BFA from Tisch\, at NYU. In addition to performing in the genres of ballet and contemporary dance in MD\, D.C.\, and NY\, Gibson was selected to work from 2010-2013 with Lucinda Childs to perform various iconic 70s works as part of the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage’s Virtual Reconstruction project. Gibson’s choreography has been presented by New Dance Alliance at Joyce SOHO\, at Dance Place in Washington DC\, Philadelphia Dance Projects\, The Williams. Center for the Arts\, and the Franklin Institute. Gibson also makes digital art under the name of Chroma and performs in A/V shows currently scheduled in the US and Canada. \nAndy Thierauf is a Philadelphia based percussionist who specializes in the creation and performance of contemporary music. He is particularly interested in combining percussion with theater\, dance\, and technology. Andy teaches at Settlement Music School and is an adjunct professor of percussion at Kutztown University. He is half of stb x at\, a dance/percussion duo with dancer and choreographer Sean Thomas Boyt. He has appeared in Philadelphia\, New York\, Boston\, Argentina\, and across the Midwest at music festivals\, conferences\, and symposia. His research centers on seamlessly integrating technology into performance to produce collaborative\, multi-media presentations with writers\, dancers\, actors\, choreographers\, and composers. \nGralin Hughes\, Jr. (aka television sky) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Philadelphia\, working at the intersection of sound & visual. He merges visual art\, and sound design through projection mapping\, audio/visual live performances and installation art. His body of work explores the manipulation of fragmented textures through the use of modular synthesis\, field recordings and software. His artistic practice focuses on collaborating with visual artists\, musicians\, galleries and museums on how to activate their performances and spaces in ways that engage audiences more actively. His recent work includes collaborations with muralist Michelle Angela Ortiz\, The Philadelphia Jazz Project\, and Alex Shaw/The Mandinga Experiment. Gralin holds an MFA in Museum Exhibition Planning and Design from the University of the Arts. When not experimenting in his art studio he teaches creative technology & new media courses. \nTerry Fox\, Director of Philadelphia Dance Projects\, is a former choreographer/dancer. Concurrently she is Adjunct Faculty for the MA in Theatre Arts Administration Program\, Global Learning & Partnerships\, in the Theatre & Dance Department at Rowan University. As an artist she was one of the first in Philly to explore post modernism with improvisational structures in performance as well as “pioneer” the Old City loft district that later was developed into arts district. She often collaborated with choreographer/dancer Ishmael Houston-Jones\, and musicians Charles Cohen and Jeff Cain. As artist Curator she founded the “Dance With The Bride” series at the Painted Bride Art Center\, where she was on staff from1977-83 and again from ‘93 to 2000. She has served on numerous Boards and panels and has taught as adjunct faculty at various colleges and universities. DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is excited to present Ekmeles Vocal Ensemble performing Mystical Paths\, a program of music with spiritual focuses as diverse as Sufism\, silence\, cooking\, and humor. Taylor Brook’s Motorman Sextet anchors the program\, as an expressive setting of the most nostalgic episodes from David Ohle’s cult novel Motorman. Forrest Pierce’s Tighten to Nothing explores the composer’s Sufism through a text by medieval Dutch mystic Hadewijch II. Lucia Ronchetti’s Anatra al sal\, heard here in its U.S. premiere\, is a raucous exposition on cooking (the title is Duck with salt). Agata Zubel’s Madrigals\, another U.S. premiere\, draws from the composer’s experience as a renowned contemporary vocalist. New York is home to a vibrant instrumental New Music scene\, with a relative paucity of vocal music. Ekmeles was founded to fill the gap by presenting new a cappella repertoire for solo voices\, and by collaborating with these instrumental ensembles.  Director Jeffrey Gavett brings a hybrid vision to the group: he is an accomplished ensemble singer and performer of new works\, and holds degrees from Westminster Choir College and Manhattan School of Music’s Contemporary Performance Program. He has assembled a virtuoso group of colleagues who bring their own diverse backgrounds to bear on the unique challenges of this essential and neglected repertoire.

DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the world premiere of Greg Brown’s Fall and Decline  performed by Variant 6. The new work composed for voices and electronics is based on texts of Sadakichi Hartmann\, Eprenius\, Todd Hearon\, Edward Gibbon\, and Omar Khayyam. The composition contemplates the inevitable decline of all things natural and manmade. Variant 6 pairs this new work with other pieces for voices and electronics\, as well as selections of Medieval and Renaissance music. \n\nABOUT THE PERFORMERS\nVariant 6 is a virtuosic vocal sextet that explores and advances the art of chamber music in the twenty-first century. The ensemble’s work includes radically reimagining concert experiences\, commissioning substantial new works\, collaborating closely with other ensembles\, and educating a new generation of singers. Variant 6 has collaborated with a wide range of ensembles and composers\, including Prometheus Chamber Orchestra\, Arcana New Music Ensemble\, Mobius Percussion Quartet\, Square Peg Round Hole and Andrew Lipke\, Jeremy Gill\, Gregory W Brown\, Kevin Laskey\, and Wally Gunn. Devoted to educating a new generation of ensemble singers\, Variant 6 has conducted residencies at Cornell University\, Swarthmore College\, and high schools in the Philadelphia area. Future projects include commissions by Joanne Metcalf and Kile Smith\, and a collaboration with Piffaro\, the Renaissance Band.

DESCRIPTION:The music of the Canadian composer Claude Vivier (1948-1983) combines diverse influences–from the the cerebral constructions of the European avant-garde to exoticist borrowings from East Asia– into a haunting and inimitable artistic voice. Vivier’s intense and colorful music mirrors his life as an eccentric and bon vivant who met a tragic death at the age of 34. At the age of 34\, he was the victim of a shocking murder\, leaving behind some 49 compositions in a wide range of genres\, including opera\, orchestral works\, and chamber pieces. György Ligeti once called Vivier “the finest French composer of his generation.” \nBorn in Montréal of unknown parents\, Vivier was adopted at the age of three. After being expelled from a seminary at sixteen for “immature behavior”—from an early age\, Vivier was open about his homosexuality—he studied at the Conservatoire de Musique in Montréal\, where his teachers included Gilles Tremblay (composition) and Irving Heller (piano). In 1971\, Vivier left Canada for Europe\, studying electroacoustic music with Gottfried Michael Koenig in Utrecht\, and composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen in Cologne. Although Vivier was influenced by the latter\, he nonetheless developed a highly personal language. Chants\, composed during this period\, represented for him “the first moment of my existence as a composer.” \nIn the fall of 1976\, Vivier took a long trip through Asia. A visit to Bali caused him to reevaluate his ideas concerning the role of the artist in society\, initiating a new period in his stylistic evolution. In the wake of this journey he wrote Shiraz (1977) for piano\, Orion (1979) for orchestra\, and his opera Kopernikus (1978–79). Above all\, it was in his cycle of pieces for voice and instrumental ensemble\, particularly Lonely Child (1980) and Prologue pour un Marco Polo (1981) that Vivier’s unique style crystallized. In a New York Times profile\, Paul Griffiths observed\, “The harmonic auras are suddenly more complex\, and the fantastic orchestration is unlike anything in Vivier’s earlier music\, or anyone else’s. Perhaps he found it by listening intently to bells and gongs\, for the huge chords that march along—around—the voice commonly have deep fundamentals with a fizz of interfering higher tones\, rather like metallic resonances.” During this period\, Vivier began to create texts in an invented language\, mirroring the singularity of his musical idiom. \nVivier spent the last months of his life in Paris. On March 12\, 1983\, Vivier was found stabbed to death in his apartment. His murderer\, a 19-year-old man who may have been a prospective lover\, was later caught and sentenced. \nVivier advocates include Mauricio Kagel\, Kent Nagano\, Reinbert de Leeuw\, David Robertson\, and Dawn Upshaw. Vivier’s music featured prominently in Holland Festival 2005\, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra opened its 2005–06 season with Lonely Child\, with David Robertson conducting and Dawn Upshaw as the soprano soloist. In 2005\, the Montréal Symphony Orchestra inaugurated the Claude Vivier National Prize for the best work by a Canadian composer. DESCRIPTION:WEATHER UPDATE: CONCERT IS HAPPENING AS PLANNED.   \nBowerbird is pleased to present the the extraordinary vocal ensemble Ekmeles performing Madrigals and Animals\, a program celebrating the ongoing history of madrigals – the complex multi-part songs born during the Renaissance period known for their creative text setting (including imitating animals calls).  Karola Obermüller’s mass:distance:time relates directly to this history\, with flickers of Machaut’s mass\, and text by renaissance writer Ungaretti. Salvatore Sciarrino’s 12 Madrigali is an epic exploration of the composer’s signature sound world of filigree and glissando\, and will be heard here in its U.S. premiere. Karola Bauckholt’s Instinkt\, also heard for the first time in the U.S.\, blurs the line between animal vocalization and contemporary music. New York is home to a vibrant instrumental New Music scene\, with a relative paucity of vocal music. Ekmeles was founded to fill the gap by presenting new a cappella repertoire for solo voices\, and by collaborating with these instrumental ensembles.  Director Jeffrey Gavett brings a hybrid vision to the group: he is an accomplished ensemble singer and performer of new works\, and holds degrees from Westminster Choir College and Manhattan School of Music’s Contemporary Performance Program. He has assembled a virtuoso group of colleagues who bring their own diverse backgrounds to bear on the unique challenges of this essential and neglected repertoire.
