DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present Same Animal\, Different Cages\, a two night portrait of composer David First. Now based in Brooklyn\, First was born in Philadelphia and was active in the city during the 1970s and 80s as the composer and guitarist for the influential avant rock band The Notekillers. His work ranges from pop songs to severely minimalist droneworks during which he can be found playing everything from computer to harmonica. First has created freely improvised jazz works\, abstract electronic music\, sound art\, audiovisual experiments\, and opera. He has played with legendary jazz pianist Cecil Taylor at Carnegie Hall and was musical director for (Mummer’s) Trilby String Band. First has collaborated on recordings and performances with Kyp Malone of TV On the Radio\, renowned minimalist composer Phill Niblock\, and has been commissioned to create new works for the Flux Quartet\, Joseph Kubera\, The SEM Ensemble\, and Thomas Buckner. \nThis event is part of David First: Same Animal\, Different Cages. The evening opens with presentations by architect and artist Jenny Sabin and two leading scientists from the University of Pennsylvania (Dr. Shu Yang and Dr. Randall Kamien). Together they will provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of cutting edge nano-to-macro scale technologies based on a very surprising source: Kirigami – the traditional Japanese art of folded and cut paper. \nThe night will feature “Kirigami I”\, commissioned by Chamber Music America and inspired by research being done by Sabin/Yang/Kamien; a new version of “9 Chains…” a music/ video work that explores the work and ideas of Buckminster Fuller during his years in Philadelphia; and “Systole I”\, a music/video work featuring the Magnetic Resonance Piano developed at the Excite Center of Drexel University. \nPerforming on the night is Ensemble N_JP\, a chamber group dedicated to exploring the connections between contemporary and traditional forms of music by uniting outstanding traditional\, experimental and contemporary classical musicians from Japan and the US. \n  \nEnsemble N_JP \nAmy Williams and Helena Bugallo (piano and magnetic resonance piano)\nNaomi Sato (sho)\nTom Kraines (cello)\nYoko Reikano Kimura (koto)\nToshimaru Nakamura (live electronics)\nGene Coleman (bass clarinet)\nNick Millevoi (eletric guitar)\nHikaru Tamaki (cello)\nConducted by Adam Vidiksis

DESCRIPTION:We invited ten of the most interesting performers – five musicians and five dancers – and paired them up with someone they’ve never performed with – on a Blind Date. We played match maker – and we were careful to take risks. What will happen? We don’t exactly know\, but Blind Date is here to inspire that conversation\, to bring the possibilities between music and dance into focus\, to help us understand and challenge the continuum of improvisation and composition in performance\, and to anticipate the unknown\, and the inherent potential for disaster but also greatness that comes from this edge of inquiry.
