SUMMARY:Ursula Rucker and Madam Data
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird and Sebastian Petsu are pleased to present Double Decker Music Series 20 (DDMS20) featuring Ursula Rucker and Madam Data. The Double Decker Music series is a unique\, intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Each evening features live music performances in an urban setting paired with a guided tour of Philadelphia’s attractions. The Double Decker Music Series is hosted by Sebastian Petsu\, a Philadelphia tour guide on buses and on foot since 2005. His love of both Philadelphia’s music and history inspired him to combine the two in a unique way. \nThis event is part of the Double Decker Music Series 2019 \n\nDOUBLE DECKER MUSIC SERIES 2019 Teaser\n \n  \nURSULA RUCKER\nUrsula Rucker is an interdisciplinary poet\, performer\, and recording artist whose work reflects on personal history\, family\, and place. She characterizes her work as situated “along the edge of the terrains of poetry.” Rucker has released five albums and collaborated with a wide range of artists outside of the field of poetry\, including The Roots\, musicians and Pew Fellows Jamaaladeen Tacuma and King Britt\, and\, most recently\, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Clarence Williams III. She has toured with her live performance memoir\, My Father’s Daughter\, which she describes as “90 minutes of self-truth and discovery.” In 2017\, she collaborated with Nigerian sound and installation artist Emeka Ogboh to create Logan Squared: Ode to Philly\, which featured an epic poem by Rucker that reflected Philadelphians’ voices and visions for the city. The work was presented as part of Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Center-supported\, citywide Monument Lab exhibition. A Philly 360 Creative Ambassador and recipient of Leeway Foundation’s Transformation Award\, Rucker is the subject of the 2008 documentary Ursula Rucker: Poet\, directed by Michael J. Dennis. \n\n \nMADAM DATA\nPerforming as Madam Data\, Ada Adhiyatma is a musician who explores machine interfaces and the embodied idea of distance. Working with handmade computer programs\, hacked electronics\, field recordings and old samplers\, they fantasize about sound as a way to echolocate spaces defined by separations\, the trauma of dislocation\, the impossibility of empathy. Ada’s performance personas in Philadelphia include the apocalyptic insect noise purveyor Madam Data\, and various component identities of sci fi noise-thrash quintet OOLOI and the environmental improvisation duo ‘place’. They also produce a podcast of discarded sound called The Floating World. \nNerve Map by madamdata \n\n  \nEVENT DETAILS\nBoarding begins at 7:45pm at the northeast corner of 5th and Market Streets by the Wells Fargo building. \nTHE BUS LEAVES AT 8PM SHARP. DESCRIPTION:The Double Decker Music series is a unique\, intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Each evening features live music performances in an urban setting paired with a guided tour of Philadelphia’s attractions. \nThe Double Decker Music Series is hosted by Sebastian Petsu\, a Philadelphia tour guide on buses and on foot since 2005 His love of both Philadelphia’s music and history inspired him to combine the two in a unique way. \n——————————- \nBirdie Busch \nBirdie Busch has been making and recording independent music from her home base of Philadelphia for a solid decade Five full lengths and a Philadelphia themed EP has had her creating sonic song soundscapes with some of Philly’s finest musicians\, producers\, and engineers.  Critics from American Songwriter to Village Voice have found her of kindred spirit from everyone from Syd Barrett to Eudora Welty\, and seem to just keep referring to what she does as her own thing and appreciating that strange place where it resides. According to A.D. Amorosi of the Inquirer\, “She’s noisy when she might’ve hushed up\, nervy when most are relaxed\, funny when others stay forlorn\, and dressy when she could be buttoned-up.”  It’s this comfort to contain multitudes that has had her and her band sharing stages with everyone from Richard Thompson and Richie Havens to Dr.Dog and Junip. \nLinks:  \n\nhttp://www.emilybirdiebusch.com/\nhttps://birdiebuschmusic.bandcamp.com/track/little-things\nhttps://youtu.be/oKzDaN8zEn8\n\n  \nSchuyler Thum  \nSchuyler Thum is a multi-instrumental songwriter\, composer\, and musical inventor. Lead singer and guitarist\, Travis Johnson\, will be performing a set based primarily around those elements\, with song structure and melody taking a backseat to mood and texture. \nLinks: \n\nBand: https://groomsgrooms.com\n“Turn Your Body” video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmU0hzGqeOw\n“Softer Now” video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um93ZZwGajM\n\n  \nHallowed Bells \nDarkly bioluminescent dreamscapes and lush electronic pop by Philadelphia-based synthesists Darian Scatton and Alison Stout. Guided by an approach to synthesis as orchestration\, they create immersive\, otherworldly music that balances lovely lyrical melodies and dissonant harmonies\, modular synth noise and delicate digital textures; strange melodic twists that lend sweetness to dissonant intervals and thickly enveloping analog washes that bloom in amplitude. Since their formation in 2013. Hallowed Bells has worked on music for independent theater and film\, released three EPs\, toured and performed frequently in Philadelphia. \nLinks:  \n\nAudio: https://hallowedbells.bandcamp.com/track/windows-murals\nWebsite: http://hallowedbells.bandcamp.com\n\n  \nEVENT DETAILS \nBoarding begins at 7:45pm at the northeast corner of 5th and Market Streets by the Wells Fargo building. \nTHE BUS LEAVES AT 8PM SHARP. SUMMARY:DDMS16: Tether and Jo Nelson (Ashley Tini)
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT \nBowerbird and Sebastian Petsu are pleased to welcome Tether and Jo Nelson to the Double Decker Music Series. Join us on Sunday\, September 10th at 8:00 p.m. (rain date\, September 12th) for a unique and intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Before\, between\, and after the music\, tour guide Sebastian Darkly Petsu will share dry wit and history about the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nTether is a music project of Lauren Pakradooni\, who performs and records using handmade cassette tape loops onto which she records various instruments and vocals. She layers these loops into compositions that waver between melodic and concrete. \nhttps://hotreleases.bandcamp.com/album/mirror-finish\nhttps://soundcloud.com/p-a-k-1 \n  \nJo Nelson is a country singer from Philadelphia. As a side project of percussionist and producer Ashley Tini\, she explores the past by paying homage to the great songwriters of Appalachia\, and the deep south. Her work seeks to create altered states by challenging concepts of ritual and their relation to time and place. By highlighting the ol’ minimalist approach to story telling and tasteful harmony\, we find that Jo Nelson is a feeling. As a percussionist\, she has recorded and performed the works of George Crumb\, Pauline Oliveros\, Iannis Xenakis\, Mauricio Kagel\, Phillip Glass\, So Percussion\, Mohammad Fairouz\, Stuart Saunders Smith\, Milford Graves\, Susie Ibarra\, Matthew Welch\, Dave Molk and Sarah Hennies. Tini has also been a featured guest on concerts and recordings by Broken Social Scene\, Do Make Say Think\, and Feist. \nhttps://jonelson.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:DDMS14: Wolf Dem and Dan Blacksberg & Tessa Ellis
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT\nBowerbird and Sebastian Petsu are pleased to welcome WOLF DEM\, and Tessa Ellis and Dan Blacksberg to the Double Decker Music Series. Join us on Sunday\, July 30th at 8:00 p.m. (rain date\, July 31st) for a unique and intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Half of the performance will be on the bus\, and the other half will take place at a secret outdoor location that the bus will drive to. Before\, between\, and after the music\, tour guide Sebastian Darkly Petsu will share dry wit and history about the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\nWOLF DEM is a live electronics duo from Philadelphia\, conceived in the fall of 2012 by two longtime DJs who bonded over similar musical backgrounds and a mutual desire to explore the bleeding edges of electronic music. Using both digital and analog tools and drawing on a highly diverse range of influences\, WOLF DEM grew from its original concept- “what your dreams would sound like if you fell asleep in an old warehouse where someone had left a dancehall station playing on the radio”- into a focused aesthetic\, at once chaotic and hypnotic\, sitting at the intersection of Caribbean music\, techno\, noise\, and field recordings. Past releases include a record for Great Circles and cassettes for Vague Audio Tapes and End Result Productions; later this summer\, they’re slated to release a new cassette with Embalming Lately. \nhttps://soundcloud.com/wolf-dem/wolf-dem-live-inciting-hq-dec2016\nhttps://soundcloud.com/great-circles/grcr-011-wolf-dem-hydrophobia-12-preview \nCalled “A virtuosic technician with abundant creativity\,” Dan Blacksberg has become a major voice carving out new paths in both Jewish and experimental music. Primarily through his trombone playing\, but also as a composer\, educator\, concert organizer\, and sometimes record producer\, Dan has excited audiences and empowered musicians in his hometown of Philadelphia\, and around the world. From performing and recording with traditional klezmer musicians like Elaine Hoffman Watts and Adrienne Cooper\, to experimentalists George Lewis and Anthony Braxton\, to performing with his own groups Electric Simcha and Deveykus ()the worlds only hardcore simcha band and Hasidic doom-metal band respectively)\, his work spans from the traditional to the avant-garde and radical spaces in between. \nwww.danblacksberg.com\nhttps://soundcloud.com/dan-blacksberg/shaking \nTessa Ellis is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and is building a career as a freelance artist in Philadelphia. Passionate about performing works written by living composers\, she is a member of the Arcana New Music Ensemble and Opus 5. Tessa is spending the next academic year as a Community Artist Fellow focusing on early childhood music education in partnership with William Cramp Elementary and Project Home. \nhttp://www.sebastianpetsu.com/doubledecker/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/03_Toying__Ventriloquizing_.mp3

SUMMARY:DDMS: Joo Won Park\, Myrrias
DESCRIPTION:The Double Decker Music series is a unique\, intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Each evening features live music performances in an urban setting paired with a guided tour of Philadelphia’s attractions. \nThe Double Decker Music Series is hosted by Sebastian Petsu\, a Philadelphia tour guide on buses and on foot since 2005 His love of both Philadelphia’s music and history inspired him to combine the two in a unique way.\nhttp://www.sebastianpetsu.com/ \n  \nABOUT THE EVENT \nBowerbird and Sebastian Petsu are pleased to welcome Joo Won Park and Myrrias to the Double Decker Music Series. Join us on Sunday\, September 20th at 8:00 p.m. (rain date\, September 21st) for a unique and intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Before\, between\, and after the music\, tour guide Sebastian Darkly Petsu will share dry wit and history about the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nJoo Won Park wants to make everyday sound beautiful and strange so that everyday becomes beautiful and strange. He performs live with toys\, consumer electronics\, kitchenware\, vegetables\, and other non-musical objects by digitally processing their sounds. He also makes pieces with field recordings\, sine waves\, and any other sources that he can record or synthesize. Joo Won draws inspirations from Florida swamps\, Philadelphia skyscrapers\, his two sons\, and other soundscapes surrounding him. He has studied at Berklee College of Music and the University of Florida\, and currently serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Music at the Oberlin Conservatory. Joo Won’s music and writings are available on ICMC DVD\, Spectrum Press\, MIT Press\, and PARMA Recording. http://joowonpark.net/ \n  \nMyrrias patiently build layers of intertwined rhythms and melodies. The band formed when Mikele Edwards (of Arc in Round) sought like-minded musicians for a new project. Coming from sonically divergent bands\, each musician nonetheless had to be a perfect fit for the whole. April Harkansan (Downtown Club) generates a wash of warm\, delayed guitar over Edwards’ honeyed but never saccharine synth landscapes. Combined\, the band forms a collage of synth-driven dream-pop and the somber\, cinematic side of the 60s avant-garde. Usually performing as a quartet with drummer Casey Bell’s (Break It Up) and bassist Emily Robb (Lantern)\, this bus performance will be a special duo set.http://myrrias.bandcamp.com/ \n  \nEVENT DETAILS \nBoarding begins at 7:45pm at the northeast corner of 5th and Market Streets by the Wells Fargo building. \nTHE BUS LEAVES AT 8PM SHARP. Join us on Sunday\, August 23th at 8:00 p.m. (rain date\, August 24th) for a unique and intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Before\, between\, and after the music\, tour guide Sebastian Darkly Petsu will share dry wit and history about the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nCharles Cohen has been characterized as a “special and singular musician” with a highly developed and refined voice. His music is entirely improvisational\, produced solely on a vintage Buchla Music Easel synthesizer\, a rare analog instrument designed in the early 1970s. Cohen has been playing his self-described “beeps and boops” since he first acquired a Buchla Music Easel in 1976\, one of only 25 ever produced\, and remains committed to exploring its unique qualities. He has studied with musical mavericks such as accordionist and electronic composer Pauline Oliveros and jazz pianist Cecil Taylor\, and is dedicated to the art of abstract improvisation\, seeking out collaborations with fellow musicians who share his love of spontaneous creation during live performance. Cohen has performed regularly in Philadelphia for nearly four decades. www.facebook.com/CBEEPSANDBOOPS \nDiamond Blazer (aka Rosie Langabeer) – Imagine a bi-polar crackpot old lady inventor’s underground laboratory\, on a tiny lush island\, where flying bugs have jet engines with rainbow exhaust fumes and cocker spaniel puppies bark daisies. It’s a jam with a micro korg\, a mini korg\, an sp404sx\, a mic\, a uke and a magnapooter (c/o Neil Feather). This will be the third experiment in performance with these parameters. The results will be added to Diamond’s ambitious research project: metamorfeces.diamondblazer.bandcamp.com/releases \n  \nEVENT DETAILS \nBoarding begins at 7:45pm at the northeast corner of 5th and Market Streets by the Wells Fargo building. \nTHE BUS LEAVES AT 8PM SHARP. Join us on Sunday\, July 26th at 8:00 p.m. (rain date\, June 27th) for a unique and intimate mobile concert experience on an open-top double-decker bus. Before\, between\, and after the music\, tour guide Sebastian Darkly Petsu will share dry wit and history about the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nNatalie Mering who performs as Weyes Blood\, has existed in the grime-ghost fringe-music catacombs since at least 2006\, starting as a conventional folk singer in an unamplified universe\, then transforming into a more a crouched/hieroglyphic electronic chasm style. Rooted in American and British folk\, Weyes Blood pulls and stretches the style at its fringes\, like a sweater that’s just begun to unravel. Traditional instruments (guitar\, piano\, drums) are set against electronics and tape effects\, collages and the melodic qualities of delay that bridge an older world of songcraft into the future\, creating a synthesis between all the best of the 20th century and those that came before.https://weyesblood.bandcamp.com/ \n  \nA native of Plovdiv\, Bulgaria\, Petia Z. has grown up surrounded by the arts and folklore of her pretty-city. Her second home-town -Philly\, continues to nurture those roots as she’s been extremely lucky to connect with groups like Svitanya (an American-Eastern European women’s vocal ensemble) and Philly’s own Balkan Monster – the West Philadelphia Orchestra. She is fascinated and inspired by visual and rhythmic colors; by everything that crosses her path and awakens her senses. Her eyes and ears are always open and searching for the unusual and extraordinary. She’s looking forward to taking the Double-Decker audience on a little musical tour of Eastern Europe with her vocals and accordion. http://youtu.be/64tYocskOtY \n  \nEVENT DETAILS \nBoarding begins at 7:45pm at the northeast corner of 5th and Market Streets by the Wells Fargo building. \nTHE BUS LEAVES AT 8PM SHARP.
