SUMMARY:Re/Create
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present RE/CREATE\, a program for six voices and six viols with Variant 6 & Sylvan Consort of Viols. The highlight of this program is a world premiere by Philadelphia composer\, Kile Smith highlighting the unique sound world created by the combination of voices and viols. Smith’s new work entitled “Endless Morn of Light” features poetry of John Milton that explores ideas of timeless divinity and the power of music to elevate the soul. Paired with this new work is Orlando di Lasso’s Prophetiae Sibyllarum\, a stunning and unconventional work that the two ensembles will present in different combinations of voices and viols. \nTEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS HERE \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nVariant 6 explores the expressive potential of the human voice through vocal chamber music that is at once virtuosic\, poignant\, and approachable. Composed of artists with a diverse set of skills and a wide range of expertise\, we seek out repertoire that embodies this potential. We collaborate with artists of many disciplines\, creating refreshing interpretations of music of the past and innovative premieres of new works. Our concerts are unique and intimate musical experiences that foster deep conversation between artists and audience. Variant 6 shares our unique take on vocal chamber music with people all over the city of Philadelphia. Our approachable and collaborative projects create an environment where audiences of different backgrounds will feel inspired to attend our events\, respond to our music\, and get to know us as individuals. \nThe Sylvan Consort of Viols is composed of players from greater Philadelphia with members Sarah Cunningham\, Donna Fournier\, Gretchen Gettes\, Margaret Humphrey\, Rebecca Humphrey\, Heather Miller Lardin\, and Elena Smith. The name “Sylvan” not only reflects the area they call home but also the materials from which their beautiful instruments are constructed. The resonant sound of a viol has been said to “imitate the human voice in all its modulations\, even in its most intimate nuances: that of grief and joy” (Harmonie Universelle\, 1636). The consort regularly collaborates with vocalists and is excited to be collaborating with Variant 6 in this performance of early and new music.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: The Music of Éliane Radigue
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control\, this event is unable to take place as previously planned. We hope to reschedule it for the Fall. Please stay tuned. \nBowerbird is pleased to present musicians Nate Wooley and Carol Robinson performing several works from Éliane Radigue’s Occam\, a series of pieces developed directly with the musicians for whom she’s written each piece. These gorgeously austere works explore the same areas as her electronic music\, but there’s something more powerful about this spirit of collaboration than the pieces she conjured alone in her studio. This program presents two of her most stalwart collaborators—or as Radigue calls them\, her chevaliers de Occam\, knights of Occam—trumpeter Nate Wooley and clarinetist Carol Robinson\, who toured the US as a duo playing these new works back in 2014\, sharing solo and duo works created with the composer. \nPROGRAM \nOCCAM X (2014) – Eliane Radigue\nfor trumpet \nOCCAM III (2012) – Eliane Radigue\nfor birbynė \nOCCAM RIVER III (2014) – Eliane Radigue\nfor birbynė and trumpet \nCarol Robinson\, birbynė; Nate Wooley\, trumpet \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nEliane Radigue is renowned for her electronic music\, in particular\, with the ARP Synthesizer. Her compositions are defined by micro-events due to subtle overtone shifts that dance above a seemingly static tone. The result is profoundly moving. In 2005\, Radigue began composing for acoustic instruments\, first Naldjorlak\, her grand trio for two basset horns and cello\, now the ever-expanding Occam Ocean series. These new works have been featured in important festivals: Festival d’Automne / Paris\, Huddersfield Contemporary\, Angelica / Bologna\, CTM.12 Spectral / Berlin\, Crossing the Line / NY\, Sound and Music / London\, ISEA2010 Ruhr\, E-May / Vienna\, [K] HEUTE / Hamburg\, and Impact / Utrecht. \nNate Wooley (b.1974) was born in Clatskanie\, Oregon and began playing trumpet professionally with his father\, a big band saxophonist\, at the age of 13. He made his debut as soloist with the New York Philharmonic at the opening series of their 2019 season. Considered one of the leading lights of the American movement to redefine the physical boundaries of the horn\, Wooley has been gathering international acclaim for his idiosyncratic trumpet language. Wooley moved to New York in 2001 and has since become one of the most in-demand trumpet players in the burgeoning Brooklyn jazz\, improv\, noise\, and new music scenes. He has performed regularly with John Zorn\, Anthony Braxton\, Eliane Radigue\, Annea Lockwood\, Ken Vandermark\, Evan Parker\, and Yoshi Wada. He has premiered works for trumpet by Christian Wolff\, Michael Pisaro\, Annea Lockwood\, Ash Fure\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Sarah Hennies and Eva-Maria Houben. \nTo say that Carol Robinson is a Franco-American composer and clarinetist is perhaps too restrictive to describe the eclecticism of her experience and passion. In fact\, she seems interested in everything having to do with sound. She is not someone who likes the middle ground\, preferring the edges\, the extremes. Her music is situated in those places of tenderness and rage\, gentleness and power that come from experience and mastery. Trained as a classical clarinetist\, she graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory before continuing her study of contemporary music in Paris thanks to a H.H. Woolley grant. Whether playing repertoire or experimental material\, she performs in major venues and festivals the world over (Festival d’Automne à Paris\, MaerzMuzik\, Archipel\, RomaEuropa\, Wien Modern\, Huddersfield\, Geometry of Now\, Angelica\, Crossing the Line…)\, and works closely with musicians from a wide stylistic spectrum. A fervent improviser\, she prefers the most open musical situations and regularly collaborates with photographers\, visual artists and videographers. \n  \n\nPLEASE NOTE: As of January 2023\, masks are welcomed\, but no longer required at Bowerbird events.

SUMMARY:Variant 6: New Suns
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia’s favorite vocal sextet Variant 6 presents world premieres by Joanne Metcalf and Klaus Sandvig on a program that brings light in the dark of winter.  Joanne Metcalf’s music draws inspiration from Renaissance and medieval polyphony\, ancient Georgian music\, and contemporary extended techniques. Her new work will set a poem by Denise Levertov: “The Sea’s Wash in the Hollow of Your Heart”.   Norwegian composer Klaus Sandvig’s music attempts to make a substantial impact on the listener and is based upon a wide understanding of possible listening experiences. His interest for formalized structures and their intrinsic qualities are often combined with a strong intention to create an organic and at the same time challenging development. Klaus will be setting brief excerpts from Washington Irving’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. Also on the program will be Metcalf’s “Il nome del bel fior” which she wrote for Singer Pur and the Hilliard Ensemble\, as well as music by Donna McKevitt and Philadephia-based composers Benjamin C S Boyle and David Shapiro. \n\nPROGRAM \n– Joanne Metcalf: TBD (world premiere)\n– Klaus Sandvik: TBD (world premiere)\n– Joanne Metcalf: Il nome del bel fior (excerpts)\n– Donna McKevitt: Translucence\n– Benjamin C S Boyle: Supplice\n– David Shapiro : It is time \n\nVariant 6 \n\n  \nJoanne Metcalf: Ka \n\n

SUMMARY:Tom Johnson: Rational Melodies
DESCRIPTION:The American composer Tom Johnson (b. 1939) has made a career of quite literally composing by numbers. Motivated by mathematical concepts such as self-similarity\, transformations\, and tiling patterns\, Johnson’s compositions are rigorously formalistic\, but his use of repetition and familiar musical materials makes the underlying processes recognizable and (usually) enjoyable. The centerpiece of this concert is Johnson’s 1982 work Rational Melodies\, a set of 21 short pieces each consisting of a single melodic part generated by more or less complicated mathematical procedures\, creating perceptual patterns that both challenge and enchant the ears. \nTHE PROGRAM \nJohnson: Counting Keys (1982-89)\nDavid Hughes\, piano \nJohnson: Rational Melodies (1982)\nTessa Ellis\, trumpet\nJoe Dvorak\, clarinet\nRJ McGhee\, trombone\nDavid Middleton\, bass guitar\nDominic Panunto\, bassoon \nJohnson: Block Design for Piano (2005)\nDavid Hughes\, piano \nABOUT THE PERFORMERS\nThe Arcana New Music Ensemble is Bowerbird’s resident ensemble for performing interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional music in interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional spaces. Founded in 2016\, the ensemble comprises a flexible roster of more than 30 musicians and performs regularly in Philadelphia. Past concerts have featured the music of Julius Eastman\, Galina Ustvolskaya\, Morton Feldman\, Moondog\, among others.

SUMMARY:Morton Feldman's "Samuel Beckett\, Words and Music"
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT \nBowerbird\, in association with Pig Iron Theatre Company\, is pleased to present Morton Feldman’s Samuel Beckett\, Words and Music. The concert will be performed by the Arcana New Music Ensemble with actors Jaime Maseda and Michael T. Williams in the magnificent sanctuary of the Fleisher Art Memorial. \n  \nTHE PERFORMERS \nPig Iron Theatre Company\nJaime Maseda as Words\nMichael T. Williams as Croak\nDan Rothenberg\, director \nArcana New Music Ensemble\nKatie Ambacher\, flute\nEmma Resmini\, flute\nAndy Thierauf\, percussion\nDavid Hughes\, piano\nJune Bender\, violin\nVeronica Jurkiewicz\, viola\nTom Kraines\, cello\nJay Krush\, conductor \n  \nABOUT THE WORK \nMorton Feldman’s 1987 composition Samuel Beckett\, Words and Music sets the text of a radio play written by Samuel Beckett in 1961. The text presents a cryptic trialogue between the ailing master Croak and his two servants\, Joe (Words) and Bob (Music). Music has no lines in Beckett’s script\, but only cues describing certain moods and textures. 20 years after he withdrew the work\, Beckett asked Feldman to give Music a voice\, interpreting the written indications with a score for a seven-instrument chamber ensemble. What results is an agonized discourse between between the two main characters\, punctuated by the guttural interjections of Croak and long\, cavernous silences. Completed shortly before Feldman’s death\, Words and Music stages a powerful\, poignant confrontation– not only between the speakable and the unspeakable\, but also between two great artists of the modern era. \n  \nTHE COMPOSER \nMorton Feldman (1926-1987) was one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. An early member of the “New York School” of musicians and artists grouped around John Cage in the 1950s\, Feldman developed a unique and unmistakable compositional voice: quiet\, slow\, and gentle\, but roiled with sharp dissonances and unnerving repetitions. Music critic Kyle Gann remarks that “in the current Babel of musical styles\, Feldman is almost the only composer whose music appeals across stylistic boundaries\, among minimalists\, post-serialists\, 12-tone holdouts\, electronic composers\, academics\, Downtowners\, MAX programmers\, DJ artists\, and other miscellaneous wastrels. Abstract yet deeply personal\, Feldman’s music leaves an indelible impression. \n  \nABOUT ARCANA \nFounded in 2016\, the Arcana New Music Ensemble is a group of Philadelphia-based musicians dedicated to presenting interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional music in interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional places.
