SUMMARY:The Music of Julius Eastman with Dustin Hurt
DESCRIPTION:Slought Foundation\, 4017 Walnut St\nThursday May 18th\, 6:00pm to 7:30pm \nJoin Dustin Hurt\, director of Bowerbird\, for a presentation on the music of Julius Eastman. Topics include: \n(1) a brief overview of Julius musical development and (overlapping) compositional styles – graphic scores\, minimalism\, improvisatory\, etc \n(2) the survey of status of the archival material (what scores we have\, what fragments we have\, what is still lost)\, \n(3) a close look at a few of the rare scores in the exhibition – including works not available online – such as “Macle”\, “Thruway”\, “Trumpet”\, a fragment from an early tonal work for violin and piano\, among others. \n(4) rare archival recordings of Eastman compositions (“Piano Pieces I to IV”\, “Trumpet”\, “440”\, “Thruway”\, “Comp I”\, “Mumbaphilia\, “One God”\, and “Wood In Time” and Eastman performing Frederic Rzewski\, Pauline Oliveros\, Meredith Monk\, and others. \nGallery hours and more information: https://www.thatwhichisfundamental.com/exhibition/ \nABOUT THAT WHICH IS FUNDAMENTAL\nJulius Eastman: That Which is Fundamental is an interdisciplinary\, multi-artist project that examines the life\, work\, and resurgent influence of Julius Eastman\, a gay African American composer and performer who was active internationally in the 1970s and 80s\, but who died homeless at the age of 49\, leaving an incomplete but compelling collection of scores and recordings. The culmination of more than three years of research\, this first iteration of this project will take place in Philadelphia in May 2017. Events include four major concerts – including several modern “premieres” of recently recovered works – and a multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring archival materials and work by ten contemporary artists who engage with Eastman and the fragmented nature of his legacy.

SUMMARY:In Search Of Eastman
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT \nIn the years following his death\, with few recordings and many scores presumed lost forever\, the memory of Eastman’s legacy started to slip away. It wasn’t until recently\, when composer Mary Jane Leech began searching for Eastman’s work\, did interest (and information) begin to reemerge. Now\, thanks to the work of biographer Renee Levine Packer\, scholars Ryan Dohoney and Kyle Gann\, and artist Jace Clayton\, Eastman’s work is ripe for investigation and exploration. \n  \nPROGRAM \n– Ryan Dohoney presents: “Julius Eastman\, The Brooklyn Community Concerts\, and the Black Radical Tradition”\n– Jace Clayton discusses his Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner\n– Panel discussion with Mary Jane Leech\, Tracie Morris\, and Kyle Gann; moderated by Tiona McClodden \n  \nABOUT EASTMAN \nJulius Eastman was born in New York City in 1940 and spent his youth in Ithaca\, NY. Eastman studied piano and composition at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia\, graduating in 1963. Eastman moved to Buffalo\, eventually joining the Creative Associates (1968 – 1975)\, a prestigious new music center noted for its leadership under Morton Feldman. Eastman was a highly regarded performer and was especially note for his performances of Peter Maxwell Davies’ “Eight Songs for a Mad King”. His recording of the work was nominated for a Grammy in 1973. In 1975\, he moved to New York City\, where he continued to compose and perform regularly. A series of misfortunes and personal struggles left Eastman homeless in the mid 1980s\, with much of his music confiscated when he was evicted from his home. Eastman died in Buffalo in 1990 at age 49. \nThis event is part of “Julius Eastman: That Which Is Fundamental” \n  \nSupport for the research and development of this project has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Additional support has been provided by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, Slought Foundation and The Rotunda. Pianos have been provided by Cunningham Piano Company.
