Happy birthday, John Cage: Noise from the 18th Floor

John Cage was born on September 5, 1912. To mark his birthday, we’re looking back at Bowerbird-Cage, the fifth edition of the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage’s Noise from the 18th Floor, curated in 2013 by Dustin Hurt, director of Bowerbird, after our centennial festival Cage: Beyond Silence with the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The playlist moves from early prepared piano pieces through Indeterminacy and several Number Pieces, and includes a realization of Fontana Mix (1958) that Dustin commissioned from Chris Madak. In the accompanying video, he talks about Cage’s work and how he approached curating the festival.
