Part of Julius Eastman: That Which Is Fundamental →
Julius Eastman perfected his multifarious minimalism in three works of the late 1970s: Crazy Nigger, Evil Nigger, and Gay Guerrilla. Each work is scored for multiple instruments of the same kind. Presented at the Knockdown Center, the concert featured Evil Nigger and Crazy Nigger performed as a piano quartet by Joseph Kubera, Dynasty Battles, Michelle Cann and Adam Tendler, as well as Gay Guerrilla in a version for a large electric guitar ensemble by Dustin Hurt.

“What I mean by niggers is, that thing which is fundamental; that person or thing that attains to a basicness or a fundamentalness, and eschews that which is superficial, or, could we say, elegant.” —Julius Eastman
Julius Eastman: That Which Is Fundamental was curated by Tiona Nekkia McClodden and Dustin Hurt, and presented by Bowerbird in collaboration with The Kitchen, in conjunction with the Eastman Estate.
