Bartók’s Monster in Penn Today

Penn Today previewed Bartók’s Monster, the Daedalus Quartet’s collaboration with Pig Iron Theatre Company’s Dan Rothenberg, White Box Theatre’s Sebastienne Mundheim and writer Jay Kirk, which we co-presented with Penn Live Arts and the Pig Iron School at the Annenberg Center. Drawn from Kirk’s book Avoid the Day: A New Nonfiction in Two Movements, the piece circles Bartók’s String Quartet No. 3, which the composer premiered in Philadelphia in 1928 and whose manuscript is now held at Penn’s Kislak Center. Cellist Tom Kraines describes it as “a theater event disguised as a concert.”
