Location, location, avocation: Bowerbird in the Daily News
Today’s Philadelphia Daily News “Big Fat Friday” cover story, by Shaun Brady, looks at the independent presenters finding homes and audiences for offbeat artists around the city: R5 Productions, Ars Nova Workshop, Crossroads Music and Bowerbird.
The cover photograph, by David Maialetti, shows the PIMA Group in Look!, choreographed by Melisa Putz, which we presented at the historic Powel House earlier this month. The piece describes our ongoing relationship with the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, which has brought experimental musicians and dancers into Society Hill’s historic homes.
“There has emerged in Philadelphia a single presenter in pretty much every musical subgenre that’s providing 75 percent of the music for that particular genre, and they’re doing it all over the city. They’re not in one venue, they’re not affiliated with some particular geographic area, which makes it a greater, citywide phenomenon.”

The “Off the Avenue: Presenting the presenters” sidebar notes that, founded in February 2006, Bowerbird has grown out of the record stores and coffeehouses where it first held shows into art galleries and historic homes, presenting almost 150 shows in less than two years. It also lists our next two concerts: New Idioms with Andrea Neumann, Stephane Rives, Jack Wright and Benito Cereno on Thursday, February 21 at the Gershman Y, and Polwechsel, “Archives of the North,” on February 26 at the Slought Foundation.
